eXtreme Elvis at The Beach

eXtreme ElvisWhen eXtreme Elvis and his band arrived at the Beach March 11 they were facing at least two problems. Promoter Branden Powers was no longer working there (he's now employed by Bikini's at the Rio), and therefore the club was no longer granting EE the nudity that's integral to his show. Plus, the Extra Action Marching Band's bus broke down in Arizona, so it looked like none of them were going to be able to make it to Vegas in time.

Strangely enough, the "liberal" cities of Las Vegas and New Orleans imposed the most censorship on EE's act, whereas Memphis hosted the best show of the tour, according to EE himself.

About 60 fans were enduring the torturously mediocre "dance" music the DJ was spinning, including comedian and new host of Comedy Central's "The Man Show" Doug Stanhope (who'll be performing a birthday stand-up set at Tommy Rocker's on Tuesday, March 25, at 8pm).

The show finally got underway at 11:15 pm, and mere words do not do this act justice; it's eXtreme Elvissomething that needs to be experienced firsthand. EE donned a thong beneath his garish, tiger-striped unitard (even he admitted it was worse than being naked) in a weak attempt to placate the club, but that was as far as his compromises went, especially since he'd been paid already. He immediately apologized for playing the Beach and made scathing remarks about the venue. While belting out Elvis classics, he "watered" a fake palm tree, then ditched his thong shortly after, causing security to lead him away during his finale, as fans cheered and applauded. Anticipating this, he negotiated a serious no-nudity deal with Moss, and everyone headed to the Double Down Saloon to await the arrive of the marching band, but not before six security guards were called upon to escort him and his entourage out of the building.

Unlike some small minds, local magic heroes Penn & Teller really got EE. Here's what Penn Gillette had to say about the show via e-mail...

"Okay, anyone can write about the fat guy with a little dick craziness of the EE evening at The Beach and how out of place it was in a frat boy meat bar. But, maybe I can point out the pure innocence joy of a guy with no shame, running around naked, singing Elvis with the ONLY voice I"ve ever heard for the Presley style of music that, in it's raw form is BETTER than Elvis Presley.

"Anyone can do the white suit and the sideburns. Anyone can do a caricature of Elvis. Even Elvis Aaron Presley on drugs could do Elvis. But Extreme Elvis takes the performance to new levels of absurdity and love for the audience. Lenny Bruce said the purpose of art was to stand naked on stage. He didn't mean it literally, but he should have. Extreme Elvis gives his all. All that being said, you don't want to forget the quality of EE's voice. The vocal quality and the intonation are unmatched. Yeah, I'm saying that a fat guy, naked, with a small dick has more love for the audience, charisma, and pure vocal talent than the good-looking Southern boy who loved his Mamma. If given a choice between seeing Elvis Presley in his prime and Extreme Elvis (who must be in his prime now, how could he get better?), I would not hesitate to choose the latter.

"I'm saying Extreme Elvis is better than Original Elvis (and I bet Presley's cock wasn't a whole lot bigger -- he had that fetish, you know). "
